It does not work well as a game in the main series but if you treat it as an expansion of URU, although not fantastic, it is decent. Watson, Myst V was originally going to be an expansion for URU before Ubisoft pulled the plug, and instead had it turned into the last game in the main series. Myst V although you don't get details in the game you are no longer playing as the stranger but as character you read about in URU named Dr. It is not really part of the main series but a spinoff. In URU you create an avatar, it was originally built as an MMO version of Myst, (it is semi-controversial for that reason but I personally love it). Notes up to URU and Myst V you will have played as the stranger, the idea of the stranger is that it is not a video game character but you that have been transported to these worlds.
